Funky models for new business. Platforms vs. Franchising

Usually, when planning to start a new business or to grow an existing one, we exploit the opportunities in our markets with one of three traditional business models: retail (from the flower shop to Dedeman), production (from artisans to Artesana), or services (from doamna contabil to Regina Maria). But there are plenty more business models to choose from. Some newer, like affiliate marketing, some older, like franchising.

This series of Masterclasses is meant to familiarize participants with alternative ways to do business. We will start, in Episode 1, which showcasing Platforms vs. Franchising. Radu Atanasiu will begin with a short and interactive session on Platforms & Ecosystems, which is a less-known, but hugely successful business model, applied by, among others, Apple, Uber, and UiPath. We will discuss whether we can do it on a smaller scale and how to overcome the chicken-and-egg dilemma. We will then generate new business ideas in teams. In the second part, a panel of Franchising professionals from the BISM community, in dialogue with the same Radu Atanasiu, will explore the advantages and practicalities of becoming a franchisee and even a franchisor. The “versus” in the title will be addressed at the end with a clever poll among participants.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Radu Atanasiu is Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Lecturer of Thinking and Deciding in Business at BISM. He teaches for the Executive MBA, the Fast Track Management Program, the Undergraduate programs. Radu Atanasiu has had several career paths and brought to fruition projects in diverse industries. He currently manages his real estate businesses and is actively involved as angel investor in some promising start-ups like 2Performant, SmartDreamers, and Evertoys, while also holding Critical Thinking workshops for companies.

Indira Abdulvoap is business consultant with expertise as Business Development Manager and Innovation Manager in several companies, in different industries. She worked as GM of a multinational until 2014, when she developed her own company. After exiting, she took over and developed a franchise business in education. She is passionate about business development and leadership and inspired by people who think big.
